Antidepressant Tapering — Mental Well-Being Solutions

Safe, Evidence-Based Discontinuation

Antidepressant Tapering

Stopping antidepressants is not as simple as cutting your dose in half. Many people experience severe withdrawal — not because they are addicted, but because standard tapering schedules are too fast. We use the evidence-based hyperbolic tapering method to help you discontinue safely, at a pace your brain can tolerate.

Our Approach

Evidence-based, personalized care delivered entirely via secure telehealth.

01

Hyperbolic Tapering (Horowitz Method)

Dr. Mark Horowitz's research shows that serotonin receptors respond to antidepressants on a hyperbolic curve — meaning the last few milligrams affect the brain far more than the first. Standard 25–50% dose cuts are too large at low doses. We reduce doses by smaller and smaller amounts over time, matching the pharmacology of how these drugs actually work.

02

Personalized Tapering Schedule

There is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Your taper is designed around your specific medication, current dose, how long you have been on it, your history of previous taper attempts, and your life circumstances. Some tapers take months; others take a year or more — and that is appropriate.

03

Liquid Formulations & Dose Precision

Achieving very small doses often requires liquid formulations, compounded medications, or dissolving tablets in water. We guide you through the practical steps of preparing precise low doses that standard pill-cutting cannot achieve.

04

Symptom Monitoring & Pace Adjustment

We track your symptoms at every step. If withdrawal symptoms emerge, we slow the taper — not push through. The guiding principle: tapering should be barely noticeable. If it is not, we adjust.

05

Distinguishing Withdrawal from Relapse

One of the most common reasons people stay on antidepressants indefinitely is confusing withdrawal symptoms with returning depression. We help you distinguish the two — withdrawal typically begins within days of a dose reduction and improves over weeks, while relapse develops more gradually.

06

Support Through the Full Process

Tapering can be emotionally and physically challenging. We provide ongoing psychiatric support, check-ins, and adjustments throughout the entire process — not just a schedule handed to you at one visit.

Is This Right for You?

Who This Service Is For

This service is for anyone who wants to discontinue an antidepressant safely — whether you have been on it for months or decades. It is especially important if you have tried to taper before and experienced severe withdrawal, if you are on a high dose, or if you have been told your only option is to stay on the medication forever. You deserve a medically supervised, evidence-based path off antidepressants if that is your goal.

Common Questions

What is the Horowitz method of antidepressant tapering?

Dr. Mark Horowitz, a psychiatrist and researcher who himself experienced severe antidepressant withdrawal, developed a tapering approach based on the pharmacology of how SSRIs and SNRIs bind to serotonin receptors. Because receptor occupancy follows a hyperbolic curve, reducing from 20mg to 10mg has a much smaller effect on the brain than reducing from 2mg to 1mg. His method involves making proportionally smaller reductions at lower doses — for example, reducing by 10% of the current dose at each step rather than a fixed milligram amount.

How long does antidepressant tapering take?

It depends on your medication, dose, duration of use, and individual sensitivity. A taper from a moderate dose might take 6–12 months. For people who have been on antidepressants for many years or who are highly sensitive, a careful taper can take 1–2 years or longer. This is not a failure — it is appropriate medicine.

What are antidepressant withdrawal symptoms?

Common symptoms include dizziness, "brain zaps" (brief electrical shock sensations), nausea, flu-like feelings, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, and vivid dreams. These are physiological withdrawal symptoms, not signs of returning mental illness. They typically begin within days of a dose reduction and resolve over weeks if the taper is slowed.

Can I taper if I am still experiencing depression or anxiety?

This requires careful clinical judgment. In some cases, tapering while symptoms are present is appropriate; in others, it is better to stabilize first. Your provider will assess your current mental health status and help you decide whether now is the right time to begin tapering.

My doctor said I just need to take my medication every other day to taper. Is that right?

Alternate-day dosing is not an evidence-based tapering strategy for most antidepressants. It creates large fluctuations in blood levels that can actually worsen withdrawal symptoms. A gradual, consistent dose reduction is far better tolerated.
